Tom Rodriguez is a remarkable luthier of hand crafted electric and classical guitars from Richmond, VA. In his tiny workshop, Tom is literally creating modern masterpieces that consistently exceed his customer’s expectations. Using only the highest grade materials, Tom never resorts to prefab bodies or necks. Instead he prefers to build everything from scratch using only antique or naturally dried tonewoods. You simply cannot walk into a “big box” guitar store and buy instruments like this. Why? The sad reality is that the big companies don’t build guitars like they used to. In the 1950’s – the Golden Age of electric guitar building in the US - the major players like Gibson and Fender took the time and effort to hand craft many aspects of their instruments. They used superior materials and employed skilled artisans to hand carve maple tops and to apply beautiful lacquer finishes. But in today’s fast paced world of slim profit margins, it’s no longer feasible to build guitars this way. This is where Tom Rodriguez has found a niche. And while Tom considers the great guitars of the 1950’s to be a benchmark, his methods and attention to detail far outshine anything ever produced in Fullerton or Kalamazoo. From the precisely fitted dovetail neck joints to the nitrocellulose lacquer Tom uses on every instrument that leaves his shop, Rodriguez guitars are the acme of perfection.
The Rodriguez original design as seen below is loosely based on classic Gibson motifs of the 1950’s, but with more refined curves and modern features for superior playability.
But over the years, Tom has also built outstanding spot-on replicas of classic Fender and Gibson guitars, just to prove that he can. It’s worth noting that legendary pickup winder Lindy Fralin calls his Rodriguez Flying V his “favorite guitar of all time”. The experience of playing a Rodriguez is akin to playing a genuine ‘59 Sunburst Les Paul or a ’50’s Strat for the first time. It is a truly unforgettable event that may likely leave you disappointed with any other guitar you play from that point on.
